About the Image Emboss effect

The Image Emboss tool runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image and click Apply. The tool convolves the image with the 3×3 emboss kernel [-2, -1, 0, -1, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2], then adds a 128 brightness offset to the result. This produces a relief effect where edges facing one direction appear raised (bright) and edges facing the opposite direction appear recessed (dark). The result looks like the image has been stamped into a sheet of metal. Nothing is uploaded; all processing happens locally.

How to use it

  1. Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
  2. Click Apply to render the emboss effect.
  3. Click Download to save the result, Reset to restore the original, or Clear to start over.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the result look gray with bright and dark edges? The 128 offset shifts mid-tones to neutral gray, while the kernel amplifies differences between neighboring pixels — bright on one side of an edge, dark on the other.

What is the output format? The download is a PNG file. This preserves detail and avoids compression artifacts.

Does this tool upload my images? No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

Can I apply the effect multiple times? Yes. Each Apply works on the current canvas, so successive clicks compound the effect. Use Reset to return to the original.
